Irish soul pop/R’N’B artist Amy Naessens started turning heads back in June of 2018 when she released her debut single, “Reasons”, and in the year and a half or so since, she’s been busy building up her fan-base by showcasing her musical skills at a variety of well-known venues and events across her homeland, including Whelan’s, The Workman’s Club and Crowbar of Dublin, Sea Sessions Live, Sofar Sounds, the Ruby Sessions, and the illustrious Electric Picnic.
Right now though, she’s busy promoting a brand new composition called “To Be the One You Choose”, which, according to Naessens, is about the internal conflict between the head and the heart. She explained, “I wrote the song when I realised I was somebody’s second best and there was nothing I could do about it except write a song.”
The touching three and a half minute tune begins with a verse that features some sedate but stirring singing and instrumentation. The vocals and music grow more vigorous just past the one minute mark, giving rise to a remarkably impactful twenty second bridge to a further sixty seconds or so of enticingly soft yet consistently powerful singing and instrumentation, after which the whole thing culminates in an exhibition of magnificently spirited vocals and exceptionally moving music.
Naessens has composed an incredibly affecting fusion of soul pop, R’N’B and folk here that manages to leave a lasting impression. Its harmonious synthesis of soft but passionate singing and hushed yet haunting instrumentation is sure to enchant a sizable audience.
“To Be the One You Choose” is also available to download on iTunes now.
