Apocalytica feat. Elize Ryd: What We’re Up Against (Single Review)

Last Christmas, internationally acclaimed Finnish symphonic metallers Apocalyptica dropped a delightful tune that was titled “Rise Again”, and included the incredible vocal talents of Dutch symphonic metal ensemble Epica’s vocalist, Simone Simons.

Now, for this Christmas, they have just released a new single named “What We’re Up Against”, which features guest vocals from Amaranthe’s Elize Ryd.

The collaboration between these Nordic titans not only results in a dynamic musical fusion, but also comes accompanied by a visually mesmerising music video featuring both Apocalyptica and Elize. Eicca Toppinen of Apocalyptica expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We wanted to make a song with Elize since we toured together in the beginning of 2020. This song felt perfect for this collaboration, and Elize is giving an amazing performance! The song is about being true to your values and the importance of being aware of formulating opinions and taking action in today’s world.”

“What We’re Up Against” is a powerful anthem that transcends musical boundaries, blending Apocalyptica’s signature cello-driven metal with Elize Ryd’s electrifying vocals, and, like the aforementioned “Rise Again” before it, it is also an enormously riveting, hugely affecting and breathtakingly beautiful symphonic metal offering that embeds itself deep in the mind and refuses to withdraw.

The accompanying music video promises a visually stunning experience, bringing the synergy of these two Nordic musical forces to life. As Apocalytica and Elize Ryd continue to push the boundaries of their craft, “What We’re Up Against” stands as a testament to the strength of their collaboration and a rallying cry for staying true to one’s convictions in the face of a complex world. The single is now available on all streaming platforms as well being available for download.
