Dublin-based indie folk/pop singer-songwriter and professional musician Brí has been making waves on the Irish music scene for years now, with her debut album, Hide, earning over 100,000 Spotify streams following standout live appearances at Electric Picnic and a sold-out headline show at Whelan’s. In 2023, she left a career in finance to pursue music full time, and has since performed over 500 gigs nationwide.
Now she’s just dropped a brand new tune titled “King of Achill”, folk track written in the days following the sudden passing of her uncle, Michael. Michael’s father was from Achill Island and he visited there whenever he could.
During the new tune, cello work by Kaitlin Cullen-Verhauz includes a brief instrumental nod to Phil Coulter’s “Steal Away”, intended as a tribute to the love Michael and his partner had for both Phil and his song.
Speaking about “King of Achill”, Brí said, “Losing someone you love is beyond words. For me, that’s where music comes in. I wrote ‘King of Achill’ within days of my uncle’s passing. Something in the melody sounded like him and that was a comfort. The beauty of such seemingly personal songs is how they tend to end up healing many more hearts than just your own.”
Consisting of a captivating combination of superbly expressive and magnificently melodic singing, admirably deep and meaningful lyrics, and endearingly gentle and extremely stirring instrumentation, “King of Achill” is a beautifully delivered, spellbindingly harmonious, affectingly personal and deeply impactful fusion of folk and pop that leaves a lasting impression.
