Bulletproof Stockings – Homeland Call Stomp (Album Review)

Even though they’re only releasing their debut album in December, American alternative ensemble Bulletproof Stockings have already drawn a lot of attention to themselves. Having been featured in The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly and The Wall Street Journal, the quartet have certainly been experiencing a lot of success as of late. This all bodes well for their twelve track inaugural album, Homeland Call Stomp, when it arrives on the 18th.

It gets going with the very vivid vocals of “Tzama L’cha Nafshi”, which enthral with their elegance alongside placid piano keys. The refrain becomes even more resonant on the way forward amid stirring strings, resulting in a rather operatic opener. “Easy Pray” follows as a remarkably passionate piece, brought to life via vigorous vocals and urgent instrumentation. It speeds off excitingly approaching the minute mark, giving rise to a rapid rhythm which arrests all the way through.

“Off Track” begins with pressing piano work that’s extremely affecting ahead of the haunting harmony of the verse. The music remains rousing the background, while the spirited singing steals the spotlight. The outcome is another absorbing affair, before the ominous ambience of “Sapphire Reigns” sets in. The classic character of this compelling composition is complemented by more strikingly sonorous singing.

“Frigid City” is a much more playful piece than its predecessors, unfolding across upbeat instrumentation and a merry melody that becomes catchy in the chorus. It’s a wonderfully uplifting anthem ahead of the intensity of the title track. This invigorating effort hits hard with its heartfelt harmony, forceful guitars and purposeful percussion, being extremely enlivening throughout.

“Day by Day” is a sombre song that makes a powerful impact with its moving strings and emotional melody. “Focal Spark” succeeds it with pianos that feel foreboding underneath vivifying vocals. “Mind Clear” adopts a dire demeanour then, keeping cool through a resolute refrain and adamant instrumentation.

“Vagabond’s Wagon” begins with a laid-back beat, before pleasant piano keys establish an optimistic ambience. A quick and quirky melody ensues to enchant on the way to the chilling introduction of “Castaway”. This strolls into a salvo of slick instrumentation and smooth singing, which is all extremely sobering as it sails towards the touching tone of “The Edge”. From here, the air remains poignant, resulting in an impactful ending.

Bulletproof Stockings have put together an astonishing inaugural album. Its theatrical traits together with its exquisite singing and exceptional instrumental execution makes for a stunningly unique and endearing endeavour that leaves a lasting impression. Be sure to investigate it for yourself when it hits next week.
