Dublin-based five-piece Cable Boy have unveiled ‘ICARUS’, the second single from their eagerly awaited debut album, Forever, due on 17 April. The band is quickly solidifying their reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting new acts, combining inventive songwriting with a restless energy that has drawn widespread attention.
Following the candid urgency of their previous single, ‘Something In My Head’, ‘ICARUS’ reveals a more fantastical side to Cable Boy’s sound. Produced by Adam Shanahan, David Tapley, and the band themselves, the track opens with a brisk, upbeat rhythm before settling into a sharp, acerbic groove that holds a hypnotic sway. The recording captures the immediacy of a live performance while layering glossy harmonies, spoken word passages, synthesiser textures, and other sonic flourishes, creating an otherworldly atmosphere guided by Semilore Olusa’s vocals.
“Icarus is about the fear of ambition and what happens when you decide to take charge. It could all fuck up and you’ll fail spectacularly or you’ll find the most beautiful thing ever,” explains Olusa, frontman and co-founder of the band. Thematically, the track navigates risk and desire, pairing its introspective message with a soundscape rooted in 1980s new wave. Listeners can detect hints of The Cure and Joy Division, though Cable Boy injects their own indie-rock energy, fusing melody and intensity as the song progresses.
Cable Boy’s story began with Olusa and Liam Murray, childhood friends who launched the band with their dreamy 2019 EP WHOLE. Since 2020, the addition of Corneille Tshibasu, Jason Aikhionbare, and Fionn McLoughlin has propelled the group toward a darker, shoegaze-tinged hybrid style they describe as ‘goth disco’. Their evolution has been steady but pronounced, each release expanding the scope of their sound while retaining the urgency and inventiveness that first drew attention.
The band has also made a significant impact on the live circuit. Known for visceral, energetic performances, Cable Boy have played some of Ireland’s most respected stages and festivals, including Electric Picnic, Beyond the Pale, Forbidden Fruit, Other Voices in Dingle, and Vicar Street. Alongside this, their music has received national airplay and media coverage, signalling a growing presence that promises to intensify with the release of Forever.
With ‘ICARUS’, Cable Boy demonstrate a band willing to embrace both ambition and risk, marrying post-punk influences with their own restless energy in a way that makes the debut album one of Ireland’s most anticipated releases this spring.
