Carron: Numb (Single Review)

Dublin-based singer/songwriter siblings Méabh and Mella Carron burst back onto the Irish music scene last September brandishing a beautiful folk/pop ballad named “Even Sad Birds Sing”, which the pair proclaimed embodied their new mission statement, “the harder we fall, the louder we will sing”.

Proceeding to end 2018 with a bang by impressing spectators at a well-received headlining show at their hometown’s Grand Social music venue, the sisters have now returned to kick-start 2019 by unleashing a brand new single entitled “Numb”.

The enthrallingly tranquil three and a third minute tune starts by showcasing an assortment of seductively serene and atmospheric instrumentation that’s quickly complemented by some endearingly gentle and stirring singing. The vibe remains laid-back and moving throughout the superbly pleasant first verse as the music and melody drift delicately in the direction of a delightfully expressive chorus.

Another enticingly soft yet spirited stanza follows from here before the whole thing transitions into an exhibition of hushed but haunting vocals and instrumentation in the former half of the third minute. This sets the scene for a wonderfully rousing climactic chorus which endows the anthem with a magnificently impactful denouement.

Carron have crafted a captivatingly placid yet incredibly powerful folk/pop composition here that really couldn’t rest any easier on the ears. Its elegant fusion of hypnotically harmonious singing and consistently soothing music is sure to engross a vast and varied listenership.

“Numb” is available to both stream on Spotify and download from iTunes now, and if you fancy hearing the song performed live, you can catch Carron on stage at the Great Thursday fundraising event for ISPCC Childline at The Sound House of Dublin on April 18th.
