Carron: She’s Fire (Richey McCourt Remix) (Single Review)

Dublin-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist siblings Méabh and Mella Carron have racked up a boatload of acclaim and fans over the past half decade or so for the assortment of strikingly elegant folk songs that they’ve released as an act that they aptly chose to name Carron.

The sisters say that through their music, which they compose in collaboration with guitarist Darragh McGrath, they aim to create a sense of one united female voice that is amplified by the strength of their sibling bond, blend impeccable harmonies through shared blood, and subtly nod toward their Irish heritage and backgrounds in musical theatre while maintaining a contemporary and powerful sound.

Like the rest of the world’s musicians, Carron are currently being kept from the stage by the COVID-19 crisis, but since the pandemic put normality on hold, the duo have remained busy by reaching out to other creators in the music industry, including producers and videographers, and working with them to rearrange the sound and style of previously-released Carron material.

This has led to the creation of a collection of new remixes of five of Carron’s most renowned songs, which the siblings intend to release as singles over the course of the summer before compiling them into an EP.

The first of these five planned singles has just been released, and is a remix of “She’s Fire”, which was originally featured on Carron’s 2016 record, Roots.

According to Méabh, lyrically, “She’s Fire” describes “a time when we were growing up and thought we knew everything, and we would fight so much that it would break our mom’s heart.”

The newly remixed version of the song, which was created in collaboration with producer Richey McCourt, keeps the mesmerizingly mellifluous vocal work of the original tune and teams it up with an assortment of enthrallingly animated and affecting electronic music. The outcome is a captivatingly energetic synthesis of superbly expressive singing and consistently stirring synths that makes for an invigorating listen.

You can check the Richey McCourt remix of “She’s Fire” out via its official music video, which was put together by videographer Ray Keogh and consists of a collection of behind the scenes footage recorded at various points during Carron’s career to date.

“She’s Fire (Richey McCourt Remix)” is also available to stream on Spotify and download on iTunes now.
