The Dublin band Fontaines D.C. has achieved remarkable success by topping the PureMzine top 20 video chart for four consecutive weeks with the music video for “Favourite”, the second single from their album “Romance”.
“Favourite” showcases the band’s distinctive sound, reminiscent of late 1980s Irish indie rock and 1990s UK indie influences, notably early Stone Roses. The song concludes the album, highlighting the band’s nostalgic roots.
The self-directed video for “Favourite” features a juxtaposition of childhood footage of the band members with scenes from a recent trip to Madrid, the birthplace and hometown of guitarist Carlos O’Connell. This creative choice offers a poignant glimpse into the band’s past and present.
Reflecting on the video, the band shared: “This video is a reminiscence of the past—of each other’s childhoods we didn’t know. Seeing people we know intimately as adults in their tender childhood years, we explore where we came from and, on some level, who we still are. The familiar faces and boyish antics captured in the video are disarming and vulnerable, reminding us of mannerisms that have evolved and those that remain unchanged. We feel their souls there.
We hope this video serves as a tribute to our friendships and the relationships we cherish. It honours our mothers, fathers, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents—both those with us and those we have lost.
Despite the passage of time, we have not lost our connection to each other and are unafraid to embrace coming of age again, holding onto romance in a sometimes challenging world.”
The album Romance will be released on August 23rd under the XL label.
