Green Day: The American Dream Is Killing Me (Single Review)

Global rock superstars Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – aka iconic punk band Green Day – have returned with a fiery call to action on “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the first single and opening track from the legendary trio’s forthcoming fourteenth full length record, Saviors, which is due to drop on January 19th, 2024, via Reprise/Warner Records.

Recorded in London and Los Angeles, Saviors is the latest powerful collaboration between Green Day and Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo, whose notable previous work with Green Day includes two of the band’s most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot. The record comes just ahead of Dookie’s 30th anniversary – celebrations for which have already begun with the release of a massive deluxe edition of the album and a surprise show in Las Vegas, where the band performed Dookie from front to back to a sold-out crowd of superfans.

Billie, Mike and Tré debuted “The American Dream Is Killing Me” and “Look Ma, No Brains!” from the new album live last weekend during their triumphant and electrifying Las Vegas, NV takeover, consisting of the aforementioned sold-out surprise show at the 800-capacity Fremont and back-to-back headlining performances at the When We Were Young Festival.

Speaking about “The American Dream Is Killing Me”, which was one of the last tracks written and recorded by Green Day for Saviors, Billie said, “As soon we cut it, we said, `Okay, that’s going first’.”

According to Billie, the new song is “a look at the way the traditional American Dream doesn’t work for a lot of people – in fact, it’s hurting a lot of people.”

As for how “The American Dream Is Killing Me” sounds, the new tune is a typically enthralling and thrilling punk rock belter from Billie, Mike and Tré that starts with a salvo of instantly electrifying guitar work before bursting into an absolutely exhilarating chorus consisting of incredibly invigorating instrumentation and terrifically vigorous and mesmerizingly melodic singing. This prefaces a fantastically lively verse full of splendidly vibrant vocals and irresistibly exciting guitar, bass and drum work, all of which stomps superbly zestfully in the direction of another absolutely exhilarating chorus consisting of incredibly invigorating instrumentation and terrifically vigorous and mesmerizingly melodic singing, after which the spotlight shifts to a short but oh sweet display of delightfully atmospheric music and vocals that precedes a second fantastically lively verse full of splendidly vibrant vocals and irresistibly exciting guitar, bass and drum work. A third absolutely exhilarating chorus consisting of incredibly invigorating instrumentation and terrifically vigorous and mesmerizingly melodic singing follows from here ahead of a magnificently energetic instrumental exhibition that escorts the song infectiously enthusiastically towards one last fantastically lively verse full of splendidly vibrant vocals and irresistibly exciting guitar, bass and drum work, which is succeeded by a final absolutely exhilarating chorus consisting of incredibly invigorating instrumentation and terrifically vigorous and mesmerizingly melodic singing that brings things to a brilliantly peppy conclusion.

Green Day have gifted the world a wonderfully rousing and invariably riveting punk rock masterpiece here that’s an utter joy to listen to all the way through. Packed with spectacularly passionate and spellbindingly euphonious singing, tremendously impactful and meaningful lyrics, and exceptionally skilful, stirring and mellifluous instrumentation, “The American Dream Is Killing Me” is guaranteed to go down well with Billie, Mike and Tré’s established enthusiasts as well as with anyone who enjoys exceedingly melodious, catchy and energising music in general, and once you get your first taste of its indescribable awesomeness, you’re likely to want to listen to it over and over and over ad infinitum again.

The release of “The American Dream Is Killing Me” has been accompanied by the unveiling of a film noir inspired black and white music video featuring Green Day in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. The killer video was directed by Brendan Walter and Ryan Baxley, and shot in Los Angeles. And be sure to note in your diary the January 19th release date for Saviors, the formats of which will include several exclusive vinyl versions, including neon pink with neon green splatter and black ice with hot pink splatter, with most in very limited supply and pressed only once.

Additionally, Green Day will be performing this Thursday, October 26th, as part of Amazon Music Live’s concert series, and, on November 19th, the band is heading to Canada to headline the Twisted Tea Grey Cup Halftime Show for the 110th Grey Cup at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.
