Dublin alt-rock band HAVVK waste no time getting to the point on their new single ‘On Time’, a one-minute-and-thirty-three-second blast of wiry punk released via VETA Records. It is short, sharp and deliberately overwhelming, arriving like a snapped guitar string and leaving a ringing in its wake. For a band with a reputation for controlled chaos, it is a reminder that urgency remains their most reliable weapon.
The track marks the band’s first release since 2024’s To Fall Asleep, a record that cemented HAVVK as one of Ireland’s most compelling heavy-leaning alternative acts. That album moved fluidly between dense shoegaze textures and scalding punk-grunge, never settling long enough to feel comfortable. Last year’s comeback single ‘Happening Again’ reintroduced that volatility, and ‘On Time’ doubles down on it with even less patience.
Clocking in at just over ninety seconds, ‘On Time’ is propelled by a relentless snare pattern and an ascending guitar figure that feels like it is constantly trying to outrun itself. Vocalist Julie Hawk delivers her lines in a sharp sprechgesang style, half-spoken and half-sung, cutting through the mix with a sense of barely contained pressure. There is no excess here, only momentum.
Hawk describes the track as a reflection on modern self-expectation and exhaustion. “This song is about the endless lists of goals and resolutions we make for ourselves, many of which have arbitrary deadlines attached to them. I think the older I get, the more I realise that you have to pick and choose the things and people that you put your energy into, and that there will simply never be enough time to do all of things without it all coming crashing down on you. ‘On Time’ is trying to capture that feeling of being right on the crest of a wave of busyness, the ‘last wave’ where you think surely it will be calm seas after this. But there’s always another and another.”
Released at the turn of the year, the single lands neatly alongside the season of resolutions and reassessment, leaning into HAVVK’s more introspective instincts without sacrificing their bite.
On stage, HAVVK are known for intensity and purpose. They have toured extensively across Ireland, the UK and Germany, including the 2019 “Drawn Together” UK tour, which brought together more than 50 female and non-binary artists to promote equality in music. The band have sold out shows at London’s Seabright Arms and Berlin’s Schokoladen and Loophole, supported acts such as And So I Watch You From Afar and The Drums, and appeared at festivals including The Great Escape, Liverpool Soundcity and Ireland Music Week, as well as performing on Other Voices.
With backing from outlets and broadcasters including, Dan Hegarty on RTÉ 2FM, and placements on Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists, HAVVK continue to sharpen their profile. ‘On Time’ may be brief, but it lands with intent, capturing a band still moving fast and refusing to slow down.
