Dublin singer Rían has released his latest single We’re All Alone, a cover of Boz Scaggs’ classic made famous by Frankie Valli and Rita Coolidge. The track follows on from his debut single The Gift of Freedom and his charity release O’ Holy Night, both of which won him a growing fanbase.
Covering a much-loved song can be risky, but Rían’s version captures the emotion of the original while bringing his own style to it. Speaking about his choice, Rían said:
“‘We’re All Alone’ has resonated with people for almost fifty years and is still as impressive as ever. My aim is to bring myself to the song with truthfulness and find the emotion in the melody and lyrics.”
To shape the sound, Rían worked with Martin Perry on harmonica, Tony Wright on saxophone, Stuart Gray on strings and Peter Eads on piano. The band’s playing adds depth to the recording, supporting Rían’s strong, soulful vocals. The result is a version that feels warm and heartfelt, touching on themes of love, comfort and the need for connection in difficult times.
For the single’s artwork, Rían collaborated with designer Stephanie (@official_crazycreative). He wanted the visuals to reflect not only the sweetness of the song, but also the deeper themes of loneliness and isolation hidden beneath the lyrics.
Production was handled by Stuart Gray, known for his work with Aslan, Brian Kennedy, Christy Dignam and Sinéad O’Connor. The track benefits from his experience, sounding crisp, full and polished.
With We’re All Alone, Rían adds his name to the line of artists who have taken on this timeless ballad, making it his own while honouring the song’s enduring message of love and togetherness.
