Detroit-Ireland duo The Astronauts have dropped their latest single, ‘More Than Friends’, via Flip Flop Records, signalling a hazy, love-soaked turn in their rising catalogue. The track follows last year’s ‘Ease Up’ and sets the stage for a full album expected later in 2026.
The song dives headfirst into the chaos of young love. “More Than Friends is a song about falling deeply into someone, moving beyond the innocent phase and into something more intense and consuming. It captures that overwhelming moment when emotions hit you all at once, bringing both panic and ecstasy,” the band explains.
The single rides a grunge-tinged guitar fuzz while threading in indie pop sensibilities, balancing raw emotion with melodic hooks. It’s a snapshot of the thrill and uncertainty of romantic risk, about finding the guts to chase what matters.
The Astronauts are Benjamin Fox and Gordon Cooper, an American pair collaborating across the Atlantic from Detroit and Ireland. Outside their main project, they explore ambient instrumental landscapes under the moniker Irish Lights, drawing inspiration from the isolation and stark beauty of Ireland’s lighthouses.
Alongside their musical output, Fox and Cooper run Sleeping in Space LLC, a Detroit-based boutique label dedicated to championing independent, forward-thinking artists. ‘More Than Friends’ continues their trajectory of blending introspective songwriting with fuzz-laden, guitar-driven sounds, marking another step in their growing presence on the alternative scene.
The single is out now on all major platforms via Flip Flop Records.
