Conor Furlong: Are You Gonna Sleep Tonight? (Single Review)

The Irish singer/multi-instrumentalist whose music is influenced by the likes of A-ha, R.E.M., Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, AIR, The Monkees, Phil Spector and Mercury Rev as well as painters and film composers such as Monet, Miro, Dali, Hundertwasser, Van Gogh and Bernard Herrmann, and who composes songs, according to the musician himself, with the aim of making “music that [he loves] and [with the] hope that you might love it too”, Conor Furlong, has just released his third single since late July, “Are You Gonna Sleep Tonight?”.

Following the releases of the magnificently mellifluous, terrifically passionate and wonderfully rousing “Teenage Fantasies” and “Your Touch”, which dropped to stream and download on July 23rd and August 13th, respectively, and, just like the two singles that preceded it, taken from Furlong’s forthcoming fourth full-length record, Recurring Dream, “Are You Gonna Sleep Tonight?”, like the rest of its creator’s music, was written, arranged, performed and produced by Furlong alone.

The typically entrancing five minute, seven second offering showcases an extremely stirring synthesis of characteristically tuneful, superbly expressive and tremendously impactful singing and exceedingly invigorating, enormously affecting and exceptionally skilful instrumentation as it unfolds, resulting in yet another magnificently mellifluous, terrifically passionate and wonderfully rousing pop/rock tune from Furlong, and one that’s remarkably powerful and hugely touching, that, like the two other tunes that were unveiled from its upcoming parent compilation before it, is sure to satisfy its creator’s established fans while simultaneously turning plenty of new heads in the strikingly talented musician’s direction.

“Are You Gonna Sleep Tonight?” is also available to stream on Spotify and download on iTunes, along with “Teenage Fantasies” and “Your Touch”, now. Their upcoming parent compilation is due to drop in its entirety on September 17th.
