Sick Love: Don’t Wait (Single Review)

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Paramore, Blondie, No Doubt, Hole and Garbage, as well as pop influences like MARINA and Haim, and hip-hop artists like Cardi B, Irish alt-rock aces Sick Love, led by proficient frontwoman Rebecca Geary alongside adept instrumentalists Conor McLoughlin, Sean O’Connor and Cormac O’Neill, have spent the past two years writing and producing their first full-length record, having made significant early progress with the release of their initial series of singles in 2023, which received strong critical support.

Due to drop May 3rd, 2024, via Paragon Records, the highly-anticipated debut album from the exceptionally skilled quartet was recorded and produced in a farm cottage in Ireland, with the band pushing boundaries creatively and sonically. The result is a record that feels authentic and true to the heart of who Sick Love are.

The hardworking foursome initially made their name with opening slots for Dashboard Confessional, Crazy Town and Fangclub, as well as by playing Dr Marten’s Boot Room in London, Other Voices, The Great Estate Festival, Camden Rocks, Electric Picnic, Indiependence and a sold-out London headline show in the UK capital’s The Dublin Castle venue.

Bolstered by their single “Gun In Your Pocket”, which was featured on hit TV show The Young Offenders, Sick Love released their highly praised Baby It’s You EP in 2020, which resulted in significant Irish and UK radio support and secured several major Spotify editorial playlists including New Music Friday UK, Hot New Bands, The Rock List and the hugely sought after “Walk Like A BadAss”.

Three intoxicating compositions called “Holly”“Sucka” and “Orbit”, respectively, were released between May and October of 2023 on the band’s label partner Paragon (distributed by indie champions Fuga) and they each continue to garner major editorial support across Spotify, Apple, European Radio and numerous other tastemaker outlets internationally.

Now, following the announcements of the release date for their debut album and a headlining show at The Sound House in Dublin on Thursday May 9th as well as a gig in The Grace of London on Saturday May 11th, and the arrival of two superb singles titled “Ricochet” and “Bodyclock” in the first quarter of this year, Sick Love have just unleashed a brand new tune titled “Don’t Wait”.

Described by the band on social media as being “about the aftermath of a breakup, when you realise you’ve finally moved on and can let yourself be free”, the typically top-notch new tune boasts a brilliantly zestful fusion of fantastically spirited verses and terrifically vigorous choruses, all of which are stuffed with splendidly expressive and inescapably engrossing singing, and wonderfully stirring and irresistibly entrancing instrumentation.

The end result is yet another typically exceedingly riveting rock offering by Sick Love that’s packed with spectacular power and passion. Like “Ricochet” and “Bodyclock” before it, its consistently impeccable and spellbinding synthesis of magnificently melodic and terrifically vibrant singing and marvellously euphonious and hugely electrifying music is guaranteed to both satisfy long-time fans of its four creators and appeal to a massive amount of genre enthusiasts in general, whether they’re familiar with Sick Love’s previous releases or not.
