Earlier this year, legendary alt-rock act Evanescence revealed that they were planning to unveil their forthcoming fifth full-length record, The Bitter Truth, “one piece at a time” throughout 2020, and have since released two tunes from the highly-anticipated album, the first of which is entitled “Wasted On You”, the second of which is entitled “The Game Is Over”, and both of which are beyond brilliant, to say the absolute least (you can read my full review of the former by clicking here, and my full review of the latter can be found by clicking here).
Now the iconic quintet have unleashed The Bitter Truth’s third single, “Use My Voice”, and it very much lives up to the extremely high standard that was set by “Wasted On You” and subsequently maintained by “The Game Is Over”. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that its excellence surpasses that of its two predecessors, and that’s an astonishing achievement considering how truly awesome those two songs are.
The tremendously invigorating four minute, two second alt-rock tour de force is introduced by some enticingly soft yet typically vibrant and goosebump-inducing singing by the band’s incomparable vocalist, the extraordinarily talented Amy Lee, alongside subtle but stirring instrumentation before the music erupts rousingly underneath an incredibly energising and magnificently melodic chant that, as revealed by Evanescence on Instagram, consists of the voices of renowned, revered and remarkably adept rock vocalists Lzzy Hale of Halestorm (with whom Amy also recently collaborated on a jaw-droppingly exquisite reworking of Halestorm song “Break In”), Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless, Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation and Deena Jakoub of Veridia as well as Evanescence guitarist Jen Majura, esteemed violinist Lindsey Stirling, Amy’s sisters Lori and Carrie, and Evanescence guitarist Troy McLawhorn’s wife, Amy McLawhorn.
This is succeeded by a splendidly spirited verse that showcases superbly expressive and exceedingly riveting singing atop an assortment of restrained but still extremely stirring instrumentation, all of which leads into an absolutely stunning chorus during which Amy exhibits fantastically forceful vocal work which electrifies while the combined instrumental talents of Jen, Troy, bassist Tim McCord and drummer Will Hunt give rise to music that’s the very definition of thrilling and the incredibly energising chant created by the combination of the voices of the skilled singers listed above returns.
A second delightfully passionate stanza follows from here and steers the song towards another absolutely stunning chorus, after which the spotlight shifts to an exhibition of marvellously vehement vocals that’s succeeded by a display of terrifically heavy and exhilarating instrumentation which prefaces a spectacularly powerful climactic chorus.
Like the two songs that preceded it – and the vast majority of those that make up Evanescence’s discography to date – I really and truly genuinely cannot put into words how great this song is and how much I adore it, despite spending the past three paragraphs attempting to do so. As usual, the sublimity of Amy’s vocal work defies description. To paraphrase a sentence from the wrap up of my review of “The Game Is Over”, saying that the melodiousness, range, beauty and sheer power of Amy’s singing throughout “Use My Voice” are breath-taking does not even come close to beginning to do her vocal work in this song justice. I said above that as a vocalist Amy Lee is incomparable, and that wasn’t hyperbole. I truly believe that, and her work here only reinforces that belief. And her lyrics here are immensely inspiring and moving.
And, of course, the instrumentation showcased by Tim, Troy, Jen and Will here is also once again deserving of the highest of high praise. Whether its subtle or thunderous, the guitar, bass and drum work is enormously affecting throughout “Use My Voice”, and the superlative blend of the affecting music, Amy’s stellar vocal work and inspiring lyrics, and the energising chants of the singers listed in the third paragraph results in an exceptionally engrossing, exciting, deep, meaningful and impactful alt-rock anthem that leaves an indelible impression.
