Sick Love: Holly (Single Review)

Over the past few years, Irish alt-rock ensemble Sick Love have released an array of electrifying songs such as “Soccer Mom”“I Want You All of the Time” and “Bad Girl”, as well as the fantastically fiery four track compilation Baby, It’s You, in addition to lighting up stages at a sizable assortment of esteemed live music venues, adeptly and most deservedly earning themselves the title of this particular writer’s very favourite Irish act, and earlier this summer they stormed back onto the scene with another alt-rock belter called “Sucka”.

Now they’ve just followed that tune up with yet another excellent alt-rock offering named “Holly”.

Speaking about the new song in a post published on their official Instagram account, Sick Love said, “We recorded “Holly” in an Airbnb during lockdown, not knowing what it would become or where it’d take us, but we knew it was special.”

The highly proficient foursome added in a subsequent post, “Writing Holly was such a cathartic moment for us where we explored things we didn’t know we could, and created something that means so much to us. It felt like being 16 again and all the strange, uncomfortable but beautiful feelings that come with being so vulnerable, and figuring out who you are.”

Signalling the next page in what’s sure to be an exciting and hopefully extremely successful chapter in the tale of the tremendously talented Dublin-based quartet, following the announcement of their signing with Paragon Records and their accompanying declaration on social media that “the best is yet to come”, “Holly”, just like “Sucka” before it, exhibits an exhilarating synthesis of splendidly expressive vocals and wonderfully rousing instrumentation that combines to create a characteristically captivatingly harmonious and typically astonishingly invigorating alt-rock masterpiece that remains irresistibly riveting and infectiously energetic all the way through and makes a completely indelible impression in the mind, yet again expertly showcasing this foursome’s truly awesomely prowess as musicians.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again now, and will keep saying because I’m completely convinced it will remain eternally true – at this point it seems that Sick Love are genuinely incapable of composing a subpar song. Once more like the rest of their tunes to date, “Holly” is an extraordinarily thrilling and terrifically animated alt-rock treat from the exceptionally skilled quartet that’s a true treat for the ears from start to finish, with its flawless fusion of fantastically effervescent and marvellously melodic vocals and consistently exciting and skilful instrumentation being sure to satisfy their established enthusiasts while simultaneously turning plenty of new heads in their direction. Truly, this lady and these gentleman are, in my humble at least, the undisputed queen and kings of the Irish rock scene. Bravo, guys! Bravo!
